Building a conservatory in Wales

The Valleys are full of stone terraces stepped down steep hillsides, and the gardens are small, narrow and often on a slope. A lean-to is usually the only conservatory that fits, and sloping ground adds to the groundworks. Cardiff, Swansea and the north coast have more suburban space for larger styles.

Welsh slate and stone terraces suit a timber or aluminium frame, and the National Parks, Eryri, Bannau Brycheiniog and Pembrokeshire Coast, each have their own planning authority and expectations. uPVC is fine on the newer estates. Building regulations in Wales have diverged from England, so ask your installer which apply.

Wales is wet and exposed, and driving rain on a polycarbonate roof is loud and wears the sheets quickly. A glass roof is quieter and a solid roof quieter still. On a steep site, scaffolding and access add to the roof quote, so ask what is included.

Hillside gardens often mean steps and a difficult threshold, and the doors have to handle the weather. French doors fit most terraced houses, sliding doors suit wider openings, and bifold doors need a level, drained threshold. Ask how the installer deals with a sloping site.

Wales has one of the highest proportions of solid-wall, pre-1919 housing anywhere in the UK. The valleys are lined with stone terraces built for the coal and steel industries, roofed in Welsh slate and stepped down steep hillsides, which makes access and scaffolding a larger share of the bill than it would be on level ground. Cardiff and Newport add Victorian and interwar suburbs on more conventional lines.

Planning and building rules in Wales

Building regulations in Wales are set by the Welsh Government and have diverged from England, particularly on energy efficiency, so guidance written for England does not always apply. Eryri (Snowdonia), Bannau Brycheiniog (the Brecon Beacons) and Pembrokeshire Coast are National Parks, each with its own planning authority and tighter control over external change.

The weather

Wet and exposed. Snowdonia is among the wettest ground in the UK, with parts of the uplands recording well over 2,000mm a year against a UK average nearer 1,150mm. Driving rain on west-facing solid walls is the single biggest weathering problem in the Welsh stock, and it is why breathable repair and correct pointing matter more here than in the dry east of England.
